Proposed directions for humanity

Twenty-five proposed directions, numbered so each can be cited, argued with, or measured where a clear definition exists.

These are proposed directions, not measured facts. Nothing on this page is an observation. Every principle is a normative claim, classified as Recommended, and is open to debate and revision. Where a principle can be measured, the measurement lives on a metric page with its own source, unit and kind badge. Disagreement is welcome: write to info@allcontrax.com.

These are proposed civilizational directions, not claims that all people already agree with them. The site should treat them as open principles that can be debated, refined, and measured where possible.

  1. Civilization should pursue improvements that have no obvious endpoint: greater knowledge, capability, health, abundance, resilience, freedom, exploration, opportunity, and creation.

    A direction can continue after any particular milestone is reached.

  2. A fundamental measure of progress is humanity's growing ability to understand nature and transform resources into useful outcomes without unnecessarily damaging the systems that sustain life and future choice.

    Money is useful, but it is not the thing civilization ultimately seeks to produce.

  3. Increase usable:

    • energy
    • materials
    • food
    • freshwater
    • manufacturing capacity
    • computation
    • infrastructure
    • knowledge
    • transportation capacity
    • habitable space

    while maintaining the ability to replenish, substitute, recycle, or responsibly manage constrained resources.

  4. When a useful resource or capability becomes scarce, determine why.

    Possible responses include:

    • expand production
    • improve extraction
    • build new capacity
    • develop substitutes
    • increase recycling
    • redesign products
    • improve efficiency
    • train workers
    • automate bottleneck tasks
    • expand logistics
    • reduce unnecessary waste

    Scarcity is often a problem to understand and solve, not merely a condition to ration indefinitely.

  5. Money coordinates claims on real resources. The actual constraints are physical and organizational:

    • energy
    • materials
    • machines
    • factories
    • labor and expertise
    • land
    • transportation
    • information
    • technological capability
    • time

    Financial policy should remain connected to these real constraints.

  6. Principle 6 · proposed

    Finance productive expansion

    Capital should be capable of reaching projects that expand future productive capacity, even when they do not fit ordinary collateral-based bank lending.

    Different financing systems are appropriate for different risk profiles:

    • commercial credit
    • bonds
    • public infrastructure spending
    • equity markets
    • venture investment
    • research grants
    • prizes
    • procurement
    • development finance
  7. When demand increases faster than supply, investigate the physical causes.

    Inflation can reflect insufficient capacity in areas such as:

    • electricity
    • housing
    • transportation
    • refining
    • mining
    • manufacturing
    • skilled labor
    • semiconductor production
    • shipping
    • food

    The question should not only be how to suppress demand, but where supply can responsibly expand.

  8. Principle 8 · proposed

    Invest ahead of bottlenecks

    Monitor critical systems closely enough to anticipate constraints before they become severe.

    Track current supply, spare capacity, utilization, inventories, expansion rate, replacement rate, geographic concentration, substitution possibilities, depletion/replenishment, and time-to-expand.

  9. Principle 9 · proposed

    Favor compounding investments

    Infrastructure that helps produce more infrastructure has exceptional strategic value.

    Examples:

    • energy enables factories
    • factories build machines
    • machines increase automation
    • automation builds infrastructure
    • infrastructure lowers future production costs
    • scientific tools accelerate discovery
    • compute accelerates design and optimization
  10. Principle 10 · proposed

    Increase energy abundance

    Reliable, affordable, scalable energy increases what nearly every other sector can accomplish.

    Civilization should continually improve energy generation, storage, transmission, resilience, efficiency, and access.

  11. There should never be a point at which humanity declares that it knows enough.

    Increase:

    • research capacity
    • education
    • scientific instrumentation
    • experimentation
    • computational science
    • open access to knowledge
    • reproducibility
    • measurement quality
  12. Aging and age-related decline should remain subjects of serious scientific investigation.

    The direction is not a promise of immortality. It is continued improvement in healthy human lifespan and preservation of function.

  13. Principle 14 · proposed

    Preserve freedom and human choice

    Increasing collective capability should expand rather than unnecessarily narrow the choices available to individuals.

  14. Humanity should not depend on a single authority having all answers.

    Governments, firms, communities, researchers, institutions, and individuals should be able to test competing approaches, subject to appropriate protections for others.

  15. Markets are powerful discovery systems for demand, costs, preferences, and opportunities.

    Public and collective institutions remain important for:

    • public goods
    • infrastructure
    • basic research
    • long-duration projects
    • externalities
    • systemic resilience
    • risks whose consequences extend beyond private participants
  16. Machines should progressively remove unnecessary labor and increase what human effort can accomplish.

    Automation is most beneficial when its gains translate into greater abundance, safety, freedom, discovery, and opportunity.

  17. Principle 18 · proposed

    Increase civilization's resilience

    No single accident, war, disease, infrastructure failure, natural catastrophe, or planetary event should be able to end civilization.

    Reduce dangerous single points of failure and excessive concentration in critical systems.

  18. Create additional places in which people can safely and productively live.

    This includes better use of Earth as well as eventual off-Earth habitats.

  19. Principle 20 · proposed

    Become a multiplanetary civilization

    Human settlements beyond Earth should eventually progress from dependent outposts to independently survivable communities.

    A major milestone is moving from:

  20. Principle 21 · proposed

    Continue outward expansion

    One long-run direction is:

    Earth → orbital industry → Moon → Mars → asteroids → outer Solar System → other star systems.

    There is no required final endpoint.

  21. The objective is not merely to send spacecraft farther.

    Develop extraterrestrial energy, mining, manufacturing, construction, agriculture, habitats, and logistics that can contribute to building the next generation of infrastructure.

  22. A possible ultimate civilizational direction is to increase the portion of the universe accessible to life, intelligence, knowledge, experience, and creation.

  23. Avoid unnecessary irreversible actions that remove valuable choices from people who come after us.

    This includes responsible stewardship of ecosystems, irreplaceable resources, scientific knowledge, and long-lived infrastructure decisions.

  24. When greater population, prosperity, longevity, or demand puts pressure on resources, the first questions should ordinarily be:

    • Can we make more?
    • Can we replenish it?
    • Can we substitute something more abundant?
    • Can we use it more efficiently?
    • Can we recycle it?
    • Can we expand into new environments?

    Coercive restriction should not be treated as the default substitute for innovation and capacity expansion.

Proposed concise statement

Continuously expand humanity's sustainable capability, knowledge, resilience, freedom, abundance, healthy lifespan, and habitable frontier while preserving future choice and extending life and intelligence beyond Earth.
