Civilization vector

Ten dimensions, measured separately

Human progress is multidimensional. A society can gain health while losing resilience, or add energy while degrading the systems that sustain it. The site therefore publishes a vector of dimensions, not a score, and for now publishes only the components of each dimension that have real observations.

No aggregate vector and no direction arrows are published yet. The arrows in the design pack are an illustration of a future display. Until the normalisation, coverage rule and weights for each dimension are implemented and versioned on the Methods page, each dimension shows only its component metrics: the ones that are ingested, with their computed one-year change, and the ones that are not.

What has to exist first

  1. 1

    A documented component set

    A small, named list of component metrics per dimension, each with its direction transform written down.

  2. 2

    A versioned formula

    The change windows, normalisation against historically interpretable ranges, the minimum coverage before aggregation, and the weights, published on the Methods page with a version and effective date.

  3. 3

    Enough ingested components

    Aggregation only when the coverage rule is met. Dimensions below it keep showing components only, as this page does now.

Alternative weight sets (equal weights, published expert sets, reader-chosen) are planned so that a conclusion can be shown to change, or not, under different priorities. None exists yet. What we deliberately do not do yet.
