Narrative
higher natural gas price or scarcity -> higher ammonia production cost (gas is the feedstock and fuel of reforming) -> higher nitrogen fertilizer price, curtailed plants -> lower application rates on intensively farmed land -> lower yields in the following season -> tighter food supply
Most nitrogen fertilizer is made from ammonia synthesised from natural gas, so gas is the largest cost of a nitrogen plant. Yields depend on nitrogen, phosphorus and potassium supply, and synthetic fertilizer provides most of it on intensively farmed land; the response varies by soil and crop. Phosphate and potash are mined, and freight moves all of it. A gas shock therefore reaches food with a lag of one growing season. What this does not fix: manure, legume rotation and residue return substitute in part, and farmers can draw down soil nutrient stocks for a season or two.

Ammonia requires input Natural gas2 evidenceEstablished relation
Ammonia depends on Natural gas.
Mechanism
Haber-Bosch synthesis takes hydrogen from steam reforming of natural gas in most plants; gas is both feedstock and fuel. Coal gasification and electrolytic hydrogen are the alternative routes and supply a minority of output.

Synthetic fertilizer requires input Ammonia2 evidenceEstablished relation
Synthetic fertilizer depends on Ammonia.
Mechanism
Nitrogen fertilizers (urea, ammonium nitrate, UAN) are made from ammonia.

Crop production requires input Synthetic fertilizer3 evidenceMechanism supported
Crop production depends on Synthetic fertilizer.
Mechanism
Yields depend on nitrogen, phosphorus and potassium supply, and synthetic fertilizer provides most of it on intensively farmed land. Manure, legume rotation and residue return substitute in part, and the response varies by soil and crop, so this is an agronomic mechanism rather than a fixed coefficient.

Food system requires input Crop production3 evidenceEstablished relation
Food system depends on Crop production.
Mechanism
Cereals, oilseeds, fruit and vegetables come from crop production directly and, through animal feed, indirectly.
